Για δεύτερη συνεχή φορά πραγματοποιήθηκε στην Ελλάδα το 2nd Duchenne Patient Academyσε συνεργασία του WDO Data Foundation (World Duchenne Organization) και του MDA Ελλάς, Σωματείο για τη Φροντίδα Ατόμων με Μυϊκή Δυστροφία στην Ελλάδα. Στην Ακαδημία Duchenne, που έλαβε χώρα από τις 23 έως τις 25 Nοεμβρίου 2018 σε κεντρικό ξενοδοχείο της Αθήνας, συμμετείχαν εκπρόσωποι ασθενών με Duchenne – Μέλη Οργανώσεων Ασθενών από χώρες της Ευρώπης, Νότιας Αμερικής, Αφρικής, Αυστραλίας και της Μέσης Ανατολής. Οι συμμετέχοντες είχαν έρθει από Αργεντινή, Αυστραλία, Γαλλία, Γερμανία, Ελβετία, Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, Ισπανία, Ισραήλ, Ιταλία, Κένυα, Κύπρο, Λίβανο, Λιθουανία, Μεξικό, Ολλανδία, Ουγγαρία, Ρουμανία, Ρωσία, Σερβία, Σκόπια, Σλοβενία, Σουηδία, Τουρκία, Τσεχία, Φινλανδία και φυσικά από Ελλάδα.
Κατά τη διάρκεια της Ακαδημίας, αναλύθηκαν και συζητήθηκαν οι δυσκολίες που αντιμετωπίζει κάθε Οργανισμός στη χώρα του με στόχο την καταγραφή των αναγκών, την ανάπτυξη βέλτιστων πρακτικών στην αντιμετώπισή τους, αλλά και τη δημιουργία δικτύων συνεργασίας και μεταφοράς τεχνογνωσίας. Παράλληλα, πραγματοποιήθηκαν παρουσιάσεις των προγραμμάτων που ηγείται το Data Foundation και ο Παγκόσμιος Οργανισμός Duchenne. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, προβλήθηκε η προσπάθεια πιστοποίησης των Μονάδων από τον Οργανισμό, το Duchenne Map και παρουσιάστηκε και όλο το υλικό που έχει αναπτύξει ο Οργανισμός σε σχέση με την ασθένεια και τα standards of care προκειμένου να εφαρμόζονται ορθά ενώ ακολούθησε συζήτηση σε σχέση με την ανίχνευση (screening) στα νεογνά.
Κατά τη διάρκεια της διαδραστικής εκπαίδευσης, πραγματοποιήθηκαν σεμινάρια και επιμόρφωση για τον ορθό και αποτελεσματικό τρόπο υπεράσπισης των δικαιωμάτων των ασθενών αλλά και την ανάπτυξη διαφόρων στρατηγικών. Eπιπλέον, συζητήθηκαν αποτελεσματικοί τρόποι εύρεσης πόρων μέσω εράνων και ευαισθητοποίησης των πολιτών, καθώς και τα μελλοντικά σχέδια του Παγκόσμιου Οργανισμού Duchenne, ενώ παρουσιάστηκε το Πρόγραμμα Scientific Director Committee από την Εκπρόσωπο του Ισπανικού Οργανισμού.
Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι κατά τη διάρκεια της Ακαδημίας, παρουσιάστηκαν οι νεότερες εξελίξεις στα Ερευνητικά Πρωτόκολλα για την Μυϊκή Δυστροφία Duchenne και τα βήματα προόδου στη διεθνή έρευνα από εκπροσώπους φαρμακευτικών βιομηχανιών και συγκεκριμένα από τις εταιρείες Ιtalfarmaco, PTC Therapeutics, Roche, Santhera Pharmaceuticals και Sarepta Therapeutics.
